LaToria A. Presley is an adjunct instructor and administrative support person for the Division of Business and Economic Development at LeMoyne-Owen College. She has worked with young people to help them understand the value of mental health and counseling. Ms. Presley has a talent for incorporating contemporary issues into her teaching methodology, engaging the youth with her sense of humor and practical scenarios to create a unique and lasting learning experience. Her goal is to continue to help our youth identify how mental illness affects their lives, educate them about available services, and highlight methods to advocate, even if they do not experience a mental illness.
Ms. Presley is a native Memphian who earned her Master of Science in Psychology with a Concentration in Child and Adolescent Development from Southern New Hampshire University (2021) and will begin working on her doctorate in clinical psychology next fall.
As an advocate and a true champion in the push to end domestic violence, Gwendolyn Turner, a bold and beautiful survivor is on assignment to lead victims to a place of healing. Her proven methods to equip, educate, empower, and encourage continue to touch hearts and impact lives.
Her message of empowerment stems from years of involvement with victims, families and criminal justice professionals. Her own experience of survival is the platform that she uses to increase awareness. Having endured over twenty years of physical, emotional, verbal, mental, and sexual abuse, Gwendolyn stands to proclaim that her life’s misery has become her mission and ministry.
Professionally, she has assumed many roles in the field of domestic violence through involvement with the Emotional Fitness Center of Tennessee, the Family Safety Center, domestic violence court advocate for the Crime Victims/ Rape Crisis Center, and as a Victim/Witness Coordinator for the Shelby County’s District Attorney office while serving as a board member for the Domestic Violence council of Memphis and Shelby County. Currently she is the Shelter Coordinator for the YWCA of Greater Memphis, the largest Abused Women’s Shelter in the state of Tennessee.
Because of her commitment to breaking the cycle of domestic violence, Gwen uses her testimony of strength to help others realize that domestic violence is not who you are, but what you have gone through.
Gwen not only advocates against domestic violence in works and deeds, but through works at her church, New Friendship Church and musically she proclaims victory being a proud founding member of the national recording artists Billy Rivers and The Angelic Voices of Faith. Her most paramount declaration of faith is being a poster child for the Biblical scripture, Joel 2:25 And I will restore to you the years……sown in tears….
I was born to a teenager mother and raised by my grandmother until I was 5 years old. My mother did her best to raise me and my brother, however I wanted to help out so I decided to run the streets. I started out with small petty crimes which escalated to more serious crimes. I started stealing cars and committing robberies which solidified my reputation in the streets. One day during a crime spree with my friends, led me to commit a murder at 16 years old. I was tried as an adult, convicted, and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
This was the beginning of 6 prison terms that I would serve. During that time, I realized that I was not living right and by the grace of God I was released. This was my chance to give my life to God and give back to the community and to the people that I hurt. I joined an organization called Bloc Squad and I became a mentor to young people at different schools around the city of Memphis. My life experiences play a vital role in reaching our youth to enrich and better their lives.
